Two Important New Labor Endorsements For Shenna
Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Shenna Bellows today announced that she is proud to accept the endorsements of the Maine AFL-CIO and AFSCME Council 93. The Maine AFL-CIO is a federation of 150 local unions statewide representing 26,000 workers, 5 central labor councils and six national union and industry councils. AFSCME Council 93 represents more than 45,000 state, county and municipal employees in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
Today’s announcement is another sign of Bellows’ significant strength within the labor community.
“The Maine AFL-CIO represents many unions of hardworking Maine teachers, papermakers, truck drivers, nurses and many more who are united to advocate for a stronger economy for all Maine workers, and I am proud to receive their endorsement,” Bellows said. “We need to invest in our local economies again and stop rewarding large companies with corporate tax loopholes for shipping jobs and profits overseas. We won’t see the change we need to rebuild America by staying with the status quo – expecting that somehow the same people will deliver different results. I will be a fresh voice for the working class in Congress because that is where I come from. I will fight for good-paying jobs and investment in infrastructure to grow the economy again for everyone, not just the wealthy few. ”
The endorsement vote took place at the Maine AFL-CIO statewide membership convention last weekend. In a speech to the convention, Bellows highlighted her working class roots as the daughter of a carpenter and a nurse.
“Shenna Bellows would be a tremendous asset to the workers of Maine in the U.S. Senate,” said Don Berry, an electrician from Sumner and President of the Maine AFL-CIO. “She understands the issues that matter to Maine people. She knows we need to raise wages and address income inequality in this country, and she is prepared to fight back against Wall Street greed that is hurting Maine workers and communities. That’s why Maine workers endorse Shenna Bellows for U.S. Senate.”
“AFSCME Council 93 is proud to support Shenna Bellows in her campaign for the United States Senate,” said Frank Moroney, Executive Director of AFSCME Council 93. “Shenna is someone who understands first-hand what it is like to be part of the struggling middle class. She has a deep understanding and appreciation of the important role organized labor has in Maine and across the nation. In a time when every single vote matters to working families in the United States Senate, we need people like Shenna Bellows fighting for us.”
In addition to the AFL-CIO and AFSCME Local 93, Bellows’ labor support includes every Maine local of the American Postal Workers Union and International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the Maine State Building and Construction Trades Council, Maine State Employees Association-Service Employees International Union, Maine State Nurses Association, Teamsters Local 340, United Association of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 716, Amalgamated Transit Union 714, Iron Workers Local 7, LiUNA Local 327 and United Steelworkers Local 449.
