The Maine Municipal Association has launched a new website called “Tracking the 2014-2015 Budget” (http://mainetaxshift.memun.org).  Click on the Impact Date and Analysis button at the top, or if you want to skip directly to a summary of the whole mess, click here.

The site displays aggregate data on how every town in Maine could be affected by LePage’s various budget cuts – a $420 million shift in costs from the state government to local communities.  It also shows in stark dollars and cents not only how his proposed suspension of revenue sharing and cuts to local excise taxes will result in a huge tax shift to the middle class, but also how his proposed cuts to the Homestead property tax exemption  and the Circuit Breaker exemption for homeowners and renters will add to the financial burden on Mainers.
