Petition for Sen. Willette to Resign
Maine is making national headlines after Republican State Senator Michael Willette posted a photo to his Facebook page linking President Obama and his family to the extremist terror group ISIS. The post was deplorable, racist, and completely unacceptable.
But that was only the tip of the iceberg. Senator Willette’s Facebook page has been riddled with racist and bigoted speech for years, making clear that this one distasteful image of the President wasn’t an isolated incident. It was part of a pattern of hate speech unbecoming of a sitting Maine legislator.
That’s why the Maine Democratic Party is calling for Senator Willette’s immediate resignation. We need your help right now to tell Senator Willette to do the right thing for Maine and step down.
It’s utterly unacceptable that, only days after Democrats and Republicans of all races and backgrounds came together to remember the march on Selma, Senator Willette thrusts Maine into the national spotlight for this kind of bigoted and racist speech.
And only after he was called out did Sen. Willette apologize for merely posting the image, not for its substance or meaning. While he may have issued a half-hearted apology for his post on the Senate floor, he has yet to acknowledge that his comments are hurtful and divisive. We can’t tolerate this sort of discrimination from anyone, especially not our elected leaders.
Racism and bigotry have no place in the Maine Legislature, by anyone or by any party. Maine Republican leaders can turn a blind eye to Senator Willette’s hateful rhetoric — but we won’t.
