More than 100 guests turned out for the Sagadahoc County Democratic Committee’s annual harvest supper and silent auction at American Legion Post 21 in Bath on October 23rd. The meal, prepared and served by volunteers using locally produced ingredients, was the first of many highlights of the evening. A fun silent auction, an impromptu skit, and a great acoustic folk band, the Yellow Roman Candles, set the tone for the night: congenial and engaged.
Congresswoman Chellie Pingree was the keynote speaker. Although news from Washington DC was sobering, she offered up hope in the form of farm legislation as well as several other bills on which she has been working. Senator Seth Goodall and Representatives Seth Berry and Mike Clarke talked about some of their work, including Senator Goodall’s efforts to develop a reasonable re-apportionment plan and to stop environmental rollbacks, Representative Berry’s focus on the fiscal matters and a host of other issues, and Representative Clarke’s commitment to healthy and safe communities for all Maine people.

We also welcomed several other special guests. Former Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap and Representative Jon Hinck, each of whom is running for Senator Snowe’s seat, gave the audience a sense of the issues and ideals of importance to them. Maine’s representatives to the Democratic National Committee, Maggie Allen and Sam Spencer, introduced themselves as did the head of the Maine Democratic Party, Ben Grant.
It was truly an informative and fun evening, reminding everyone that Maine is still a place where our politicians are accessible, our voices matters, and our chowder rocks.
