BIW Workers Tout Vitelli As Job Creator And Worker Advocate
ARROWSIC— Democratic State Senate candidate Eloise Vitelli has received another endorsement from the working people of Maine. The members of Bath Iron Works’ largest union, IAMAW Local 6, endorsed Vitelli as their candidate of choice in the upcoming special election for Senate District 19, which includes all of Sagadahoc County and the town of Dresden.
IAMAW Local S-6 represents 3,300 members, including more than 800 of whom live in Senate District 19.
“The workers at BIW are vital to our community,” said Vitelli. “Their hard work epitomizes the Maine work ethic and spirit. I am proud to receive their support and vote of confidence. They can count on me to be a strong voice and advocate for the working people of our state.”
Vitelli is also a long-time, well-known advocate for workers, small business and entrepreneurship in Maine having run Women, Work, and Community programs—creating a statewide job training program that has assisted more than 3,000 Mainers start businesses.
Earlier this week, BIW confirmed the company would be laying off 40 employees early next month.
“This is tough news for 40 families in our community,” said Vitelli. “We need to do all we can to provide support and assistance to the folks who are soon facing unemployment. We also need to make sure that more jobs aren’t lost and, that includes reaching out and working with our federal delegation as well as looking at ways that BIW can diversify its expertise and projects into the future.”
Vitelli has also earned endorsements and support from the Maine Education Association, the Maine State Employees Union, MSEA-SEIU Local 1989, and the Maine AFL-CIO.
The special election for Senate District 19 will be held on Tuesday, August 27th.
